This program helps get the wheels rolling during the first week of school. Bus greeters will meet children as they exit the bus at school. They will help kids learn their bus numbers, by writing the bus number on their hand as they exit the bus. After school, they will hold signs with bus numbers and assist children to get to the correct bus.

During the last week of school, the students enjoy a few hours of zany outdoor activities organized by the PE teachers, PTSA and 5th graders. A fun, easy, quick volunteer opportunity for parents.

Discovery has a terrific library program. Volunteers are always needed to help process books and help with other projects. You can coordinate to be there during your child's class.

Help coordinate communication of PTSA and other events to all parents in your child's classroom. Help the teacher with communication to parents in the classroom or various other things the teacher may need.

If you choose to volunteer to help, you will work along side Miss Plakinger to facilitate student learning. We would also like to create a garden club for students.

Assist the younger children in the lunchroom each day with their student numbers and getting their lunches.

Help the photographer and students with individual picture day in September and with class pictures in March/April.

Ever had to take two pie pans, some string, and some paper and create a robot? If not you're missing out! If you're interested in fostering your child's imagination and problem solving skills, check out Destination Imagination. DI is a community-based, school-friendly, child driven program that builds participant's creativity, problem solving and teamwork in enjoyable and meaningful ways. Teams are usually grade-based and meet afternoons, evenings or weekends.

K-kids empowers children to make their world a better place. This club, sponsored by the Kiwanis, is a kids group that plans and puts into action ideas to help others. K-Kids get to learn about neighbors-in-need, students in other countries, distressed animals, and our environment. K-Kids help children develop friendships, leadership, caring, empathy, planning skills and self esteem.

"Discovery's Got Talent" Just like the reality show on tv, your student gets to perform in front of an audience. Students create a 1 minute act to present at auditions and perform in a one evening show.

The Book Fair will be held on Curriculum nights on September 20 and 21 for 2012. Don't forget to stop by on your way to and from your child's classroom. Tuesday-4-5pm family book fair time, 7-8pm parents only, Wednesday 3-5pm Family Book fair time, 7-8pm parents only

Volunteers in this program research grants that may be available to the school and staff and work with the staff members who are interested in submitting grant requests. To date Discovery has received several grants from companies such as Starbucks, Lowes and the Issaquah Schools Foundation.

If you are interested in what is going on in Olympia and how it affects our children become our legislative representative. Help Discovery families learn and understand political education issues by passing on information from our state legislation rep via email.

Opportunity to attend all PTSA meetings and report back to the teacher and classroom on what is happening with PTSA and the school.

Each year the PTSA gathers student, teacher and staff contact information and compiles it into the student directory. PTSA Members receive one free directory with the option to buy additional directories for the price of $10.00. Non-members may purchase a student directory for the price of $25.00. Community members may advertise a business in the directory for a fee. Contact the PTSA for details.

The PTSA provides an opportunity to order pre-packaged school supplies. Parents pre-order the supplies at the end of the previous year online. The supplies are then delivered to classrooms before the first day of school.

Parent volunteers present lessons in art in individual classes that are an extension of the classroom curriculum. There is "NO" experience necessary and all materials are provided. You will also, set up artwork for your class at the Art Show in May.

Every year, the PTSA art program and VISTA (Very Intriguing Studies Through Art), puts on a fabulous evening of art appreciation created by all of our favorite artists...our children! Art docents help each child create a piece of artwork for the Art Show. There is a minor suggested donation at this event that helps fund this important program.

What is Reflections? Reflections is a PTSA supported art contest to encourage children to express themselves through a variety of art medium.

What types of art medium can be submitted? Dance/choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and visual arts (includes art forms such as drawing, painting, print making and collage).
To participate: Start creating . . . then fill out the entry form and make sure that it is signed by your parent and yourself. Also, please fill out the attached form “Diversity means . . .” and send it in along with your entry and entry form. Please note that you can only submit three entries for each student!

Top selections in each category will be considered at a District competition with the chance to move on to State and even Nationals!

Save your "Box Tops for Education"! Clip them from General Mills cereal boxes and other items labeled "Box Tops for Education" We will send home collection sheets throughout the year. When your child brings the sheet back with the box tops and puts it into the Box Tops collections box in the main hallway, they will earn a prize. The money collected from box tops allows us to purchase PE and recess equipment. So, save your Box Tops!

Our PTSA has several programs that help earn extra cash for Discovery PTSA sponsored programs. In addition to Box Tops, there are cash incentives to the school when you shop at Target, Safeway, use Good Search or Escript dining, and other businesses. There are a number of effortless ways your family can contribute money to Discovery. Look for more information on these programs in your First Day Packets.

Walk-a-thon is the PTSA’s major fundraiser and fun get-together at the beginning of the school year. The silent auction, music, prizes and food keep the fun going all afternoon long while the children walk around the school building. Watch for your donation envelope/permission slip and more information about this fun event in the first few weeks of school. Your tax deductable donations fund all of the PTSA programs. Please sign up to volunteer your time today!

Spelling competition. Two preliminary rounds and one final round all held in January.

Students are encouraged to work with a parent or in partnership with other students to create a science project and then develop a display about the project. Students can conduct an experiment, explore a natural phenomenon or participate in any number of science related activities. Look for more information on this exciting event in the spring.

This program coordinates donations to local families in need over the holidays.

This fund is established to to help Discovery families in need.

PTSA provides a special movie night at the school for all PTSA members to attend. Snacks will be provided for a nominal fee.
May be held in conjunction with a PTSA general meeting all parents can attend while their children are watching the movie.

Turn your child into an Eager Reader! The goal of the program is to foster a love of reading by encouraging students to read outside the classroom. Students can earn prizes by reaching various goals throughout the alotted time period.

Fifth Grade is a special time of transition, at the end of the year a ceremony and party is held to celebrate the students' completion of elementary school.

Help provide baked goods and other food items for school events such as: Walk a Thon, Staff Holiday Cookie Exchange, Science Fair and The Art Show.

Each year in the spring, PTSA recognizes the teachers and staff with special activities and treats.
Also, during December PTSA members offer a cookie party for the busy staff to take home treats for their families.

Coordinate all aspects of the Summer Journal writing program. Created and hand out all materials. Collect materials in the fall and coordinate party.

Help your kids remember all the fun they had this year with a yearbook. It’s a special, 80 page full color keepsake of photos and remembrances.

A fun night for all students to come and enjoy grade level appropriate math games at the school.

Discovery tests all students for both hearing and vision. Volunteers are needed for morning and afternoon shifts at the beginning of the school year.

Every year these awards are presented by the PTSA to school staff and community volunteers in recognition of their dedication and service to children. When the form comes out in the spring, please be sure to nominate an inspiring volunteer, educator or child advocate.

When you join PTSA, you join a community that encourages student achievement and enriches the learning environment. Our goal is 100% membership! You don’t have to have a child at Discovery… everyone in our community is encouraged to join.

Emergency kits are required to provide food and drink to our students in the event of an emergency in which parents can't reach the school. Parents will provide a kit at the beginning of the school year for each child. Separate kits provided by the PTSA are provided for the areas where students may be when out of the classroom. Each family will be responsible for sending in their own child’s emergency kit for their classroom. Please provide food for approximately 72 hours. The non perishable food should not expire before the end of the school year. ABSOLUETLY NO NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS!! Other comfort and emergency items maybe included as long as it fits in a gallon freezer bag, note / picture from parents, glow stick, emergency blanket, etc. Label the bag with your child’s name, grade, and teacher!!! Coordination is needed at the end of the year to see what is not expired in the other student areas and then supplies purchased and distributed for the next year.

Coordinate with the Issaquah School District on the advertising of Parent Education seminars within our area. Pass on information to PTSA members via e-mail.

Assist the Discovery Staff and families interpret school information in various languages both at school events and on an individual basis.

A fun Friday treat! Kids can bring a quarter each Friday for a bag of popcorn. In the winter popcorn is provided when the weather is suitable. Volunteers are needed to run the machine and hand out popcorn during recess.
