Walk-A-Thon

Walk-a-thon is the PTSA’s major fundraiser and fun get-together at the beginning of the school year. The silent auction, music, prizes and food keep the fun going all afternoon long while the children walk around the school building. School Enrichment Programs

Art Docent

Chair:

The art docent chairperson will identify a parent volunteer from each classroom to provide art lessons to students as an extension of the classroom curriculum approximately once per month. The chair will work with classroom docents to provide training at the beginning of the year, will update and revise notebooks and resource materials, and will work with volunteers to plan and organize the annual Art Show in May. Classroom art docents implement already designed grade-level art lessons in coordination with the classroom teacher requests. "NO" experience is necessary and all materials are provided. Classroom docents sign up at classroom level.

Every year, the PTSA art program puts on a fabulous evening of art appreciation created by all of our favorite artists...our children! Art docents help each child create a piece of artwork for the Art Show and a classroom art piece for the silent auction. There is a minor suggested donation at this event that helps fund this important program.

Students are encouraged to work with a parent or in partnership with other students to create a science project and then develop a display about the project. Students can conduct an experiment, explore a natural phenomenon or participate in any number of science related activities. Look for more information on this exciting event in the spring.

Spelling Bee qualifying written events will be held in January and the oral spelling bees and championship round will be held early February.

Bus Greeters - First 2 Weeks of School Only

Chair:

This program helps get the wheels rolling during the first week of school. Bus greeters will meet kindergarteners as they exit the bus at school. They will help kids learn their bus numbers, by writing the bus number on their hand as they exit the bus. After school, they will hold signs with bus numbers and assist children to get to the correct bus. Approx time investment 15 min in the AM and 15 min in the PM (Sept 6th - 10th).

During the last week of school, the students enjoy a few hours of zany outdoor activities organized by the PE teachers, PTSA and 5th graders. A fun, easy, quick volunteer opportunity for parents.

Discovery has a terrific library program. Volunteers are always needed to help process books and help with other projects. You can coordinate to be there during your child's class.

Join the General Volunteer group to receive emails when a teacher, staff member, specialist or even the PTSA needs additional help throughout the school year. Opportunities may be for a short period of time or ongoing. You will receive detailed email requests as they come in and only need to reply to those you are interested in and able to fulfill. This is a great way to get involved at Discovery when the timing works with your schedule!

Health and Safety

Emergency kits are required to provide food and drink to our students in the event of an emergency in which parents can't reach the school. Parents will provide a kit at the beginning of the school year for each child. Separate kits provided by the PTSA are provided for the areas where students may be when out of the classroom. Each family will be responsible for sending in their own child’s emergency kit for their classroom. Please provide food for approximately 72 hours. The non perishable food should not expire before the end of the school year. ABSOLUETLY NO NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS!! Other comfort and emergency items maybe included as long as it fits in a gallon freezer bag, note / picture from parents, glow stick, emergency blanket, etc. Label the bag with your child’s name, grade, and teacher!!! Coordination is needed at the end of the year to see what is not expired in the other student areas and then supplies purchased and distributed for the next year.

Save your "Box Tops for Education"! Clip them from General Mills cereal boxes and other items labeled "Box Tops for Education" We will send home collection sheets throughout the year. When your child brings the sheet back with the box tops and puts it into the Box Tops collections box in the main hallway, they will earn a prize. The money collected from box tops allows us to purchase PE and recess equipment. So, save your Box Tops!
