Help Your Child Make a New Friend

It’s safe to say that your child misses connecting with their classmates on a personal level.

It’s probably also a safe bet that you’d like them to have a little less screen time.

Help your child make a new friend by joining the Discovery Pen Pal program!

Your Discovery PTSA has created a Pen Pal Program for our Discovery students to encourage social interactions and give our kids another opportunity to connect with peers.

This program will allow kids to practice good social skills, discover similarities, and celebrate our differences! The more students who sign up, the more robust the experience will be! Pen Pals will be matched by grade first and then by interest areas.

Note that we cannot guarantee that students will find a match in the same grade, but that’s part of the fun and being a part of a robust school community!

Sign up through October 16 by clicking here. Questions about the program? View the Pen Pal Agreement on the signup form or email Linda at DiscoveryAbers@gmail.com.

Our Virtual Book Fair is Live

Getting away from the screen is more important than ever. Why not encourage a love of reading by adding books to your home library?

"Guess How Many?" Contest

Your PTSA is excited to host our first “Guess How Many?” contest!

Students in each grade can try their hand at guessing how many pieces of candy are in the jar. Each winner (the person with the closest guess) by grade will receive a carving pumpkin, a carving kit, a family craft kit and ALL the candy in the container!

Teachers and staff: we have a jar for you, too!

Find your grade below to view the jar and submit your guesses by Friday, October 9!

Get Your Young Artist Involved with Reflections

Reflections is a long-standing National PTA program that helps students celebrate their creativity. By exploring their own thoughts, feelings and ideas, students will develop their artistic literacy and increase their confidence.

We hope all Discovery students create an original work of art in one (or all!) of six available categories.

This year, the theme for Reflections is “I matter because...”

Given our previous support for the Black Lives Matter movement, we and others in the community find the theme problematic as it opens the door to provide interpretations that are counter to the Black Lives Matter movement. No submissions that equate to “All Lives Matter” will be accepted for judging.

We encourage students to think about the theme in the alternate way of “I am valuable because...” or “I am strong because...” when developing their entries.

The deadline for Discovery student entries is November 2nd. For more information, including the submission requirements, questions on the Reflections program or entry process, please click here.

Upcoming Fundraisers

As the school year looks different, so does your Discovery PTSA. Normally, we’d be in the middle of our fall fundraiser right now, but we’re pausing that effort until we can best determine how PTSA funds can support our school.

However, raising funds for our school can still happen! Read on for ways you can easily support Discovery.

  • Use AmazonSmile: when buying from Amazon on your desktop or mobile devices, make sure you have the AmazonSmile feature enabled. There is no mark-up on items, and your Discovery PTSA receives a portion of each sale. Visit our facebook or Instagram pages or AmazonSmile's page for a tutorial.
  • Chipotle Fundraiser: more details to follow, but save the date for Monday, November 23 and plan to enjoy a pre-Thanksgiving meal at Chipotle, all while supporting your Discovery PTSA.
  • MOD Pizza Fundraiser: another chance to not make dinner! Save the date for Thursday, December 17 and plan to enjoy a pre-Winter Break meal at MOD Pizza, with proceeds going to your Discovery PTSA.

November General Membership Meeting

We invite all parents from Discovery to attend our Virtual General Membership meeting on Wednesday, November 18. An agenda and ZOOM link will be on the Discovery PTSA website prior to the meeting, so save the date and be on the lookout!
