Fall Fundraiser Recap and Movie Night Details

Thank you to everyone who donated to our Fall Fundraiser so far! Unfortunately, we missed our goal of $40,000, with our final donation total coming in at $32,669. We had a seperate goal of $18,000 in company matching, and are still waiting on our final totals (it can take a few months for all company matches to come in), so we’ll be sure to send an update out with final numbers.

Even though we didn’t hit our goal, we believe in building strong communities, so we’ll still host our FREE family movie night on Friday, November 22nd. The movie was selected by Boran W., 2nd grade, (and he gets to keep the DVD!), as one of the 40 prizes that we gave away during our Fall Fundraiser. The movie is rated PG and features your favorite brick-shaped characters on their second adventure together. Please RSVP by registering here

If you forgot to donate, or want to contribute additional donations, there’s still time! Please click here.

Multicultural Night — Tonight!

Multicultural Night is just one of the many beloved events and programs that your Discovery PTSA sponsors.

We hope your family is able to attend tonight at 6:00 p.m. and enjoy this wonderful look into the cultures and traditions of your fellow Discovery families.

Save the Date: PTSA General Meeting

Your PTSA holds five General Meetings a year, and we encourage ALL parents to attend! The main purpose of our next meeting, being held on Thursday, November 19 at 6:30 p.m., is teacher/staff grant review and approval.

This is your chance to have your voice heard and have a say in how the funds that the PTSA has raised are spent. We have a variety of grant requests to review, covering Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms, and requestors will be at the meeting presenting their grants and answering any questions you may have.

FREE pizza and childcare are provided for all families attending. We hope to see you there!

Holiday Gift Barn

Discovery Elementary is once again proud to help with the Holiday Gift Barn, an annual event put on by the Issaquah Food & Clothing Bank. This program helps families in need that reside in the Issaquah School District during the holiday season. Thanks to thousands of donors and almost 400 volunteers, over 1,800 children received gifts for the holidays last year. Let’s help make the holidays brighter for children in our community! Please click here for more information on how you can help.

Volunteer Spotlight

They say it takes a village, and volunteers are our village! Volunteers give so much of their time to Discovery, helping make sure our kids have the best school experience possible. While we can never fully repay our volunteers for all they do, we’ll be selecting a “Volunteer of the Month” to give them much-deserved recognition.

This month, Portia Wilcock has been chosen; Portia is an invaluable fixture at our school, particularly in the library, and we can’t thank her enough for all she does. Please click here to learn a little bit more about Portia.

Volunteers Still Needed

Speaking of volunteering, one of the best and easiest ways to make a difference at your child’s school is to volunteer! There are still plenty of volunteer opportunities throughout the year, including:

  • Classroom Photographer for the Yearbook: Our yearbook features more than 100 pages of pictures and we’d like to include pictures of EVERY student. That’s where you come in! As a classroom photographer, you’ll take photos of your student’s class during parties, field trips, art lessons, etc. Can’t be there for every event? No problem; work with other parents in your class to capture images. No fancy camera required — just a point-and-shoot or your phone’s camera will be perfect. We still have 15 classes without a photographer; chances are it may be your class!
  • Hearing and Vision Testing: On November 21, all students at Discovery will have FREE hearing and vision tests done. Volunteers are needed to take students to and from the testing and help administer the tests. Training will be provided.
  • Reflections Entrant Judging: Students have worked hard and submitted their entries for this years’ Reflections theme, “Look Within”. Anyone can judge the submissions; they are on display in the main hallway by the library, and scoring sheets are in the library. Judging ends on November 15.
Please visit this link to view ALL available opportunities. Thanks for helping us make Discovery the best it can be. A very special thank you to last week’s Spirit Week Pep Squad: Linda, Lisa, Jillian, Noreen, Dana, Geetanjali, Mary, Matt, Nichole, Sasi, Sowmya, Tanja, Miss Denise and the 5th Grade Ambassadors!
