Discovery PTSA’s Annual Spelling Bee for students in 1st through 5th grade is coming up! The purpose of the spelling bee is to help children improve spelling and increase vocabulary in a friendly and supportive environment. If your child would like to participate, please make note of the following dates:

Preliminary Written Round
Friday, January 17th 
(during lunch recess)

Spelling Bee Finals

1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grades
Monday, February 3rd
Multi-Purpose Room
6:00 - 8:00 pm
4th, 5th Grades & Championship
Tuesday, February 4th
Multi-Purpose Room
6:00 - 8:00 pm


  • Click on ‘Register’ in the menu bar above to register your child.
  • Deadline to register is Tuesday, January 14th. No exceptions.
  • If your child would like to study ahead of time, please click on “Word Lists” in the menu above.
  • To test their spelling ability, your child may be asked to spell words that do not appear on the Word List.
  • From each grade, the top 10 finalists from the written qualifying event on January 17th will move on to participate in the oral Spelling Bee Finals on February 3rd or 4th(depending on their grade level).
  • The first-place winner from each grade will participate in the Championship Round on February 4th.
  • The winner of the Championship Round will represent Discovery Elementary at the Regional Scripps Spelling Bee 2020.
  • All participants and parents are expected to adhere to the ISD Code of Conduct.

**Please note, in order for this competition to be friendly and fair to all, Spelling Bee rules as set out prior to each event must be adhered to. No exceptions will be made.**
