Discovery PTSA’s Annual Spelling Bee for students in 1st through 5th grade is coming up! The purpose of the spelling bee is to help children improve spelling and increase vocabulary in a friendly and supportive environment. If your child would like to participate, please make note of the following dates:

Preliminary Written Round
(conducted during your child's first recess)
Wednesday, January 24th

Spelling Bee Finals
1st, 2nd and 3rd grades
Wednesday, February 7th
Multi-Purpose Room
6:00 - 8:00 pm

4th & 5th grades, and Championship
Thursday, February 8th
Multi-Purpose Room
6:00 - 8:00 pm

  • Click on ‘Register’ in the menu bar above to register your child.
  • Your child does not have to study ahead of time, but if he/she would like to, please click on “Word Lists” in the menu above.
  • During the oral Spelling Bee your child will be asked to spell words not only from the list provided, but also words that do not appear on the Word List to test their spelling ability.
  • The top 10 finalists (from each grade) from the written qualifying event on Jan. 24th will move on to participate in the oral Spelling Bee Finals on Feb 7th or 8th, depending on their grade level.
  • The first-place winner from each grade will go through to the Championship Round on Feb 8th.
  • The winner of the Championship Round will move on to represent Discovery Elementary at a regional Spelling Bee event in Seattle!

**Please note, in order for this competition to be friendly and fair to all, spelling bee rules as set out prior to each event, must be adhered to. No exceptions will be made. **
