We can all agree: what a school year! Even with all of the uncertainty and change that surrounded this year, your Discovery PTSA was still able to make meaningful and positive impacts using your donations to better the experience for students at Discovery Elementary.

Below are just a few examples showing YOUR $63,676 in donations at work!

Educational Highlights

  • Laptops were provided to the 3rd and 4th grade classes, bringing them in line with the 5th grade classes and to 1:1 — no more sharing!
  • $8,814 was used by teachers to directly impact their classrooms, including new books and supplies.
  • $21,778 in grants were awarded to teachers, which ran the gamut including the laptops noted above, to Lexia licenses for our Kindergarteners, to diversity-focused books for our 3rd graders, and even badminton racquets for the entire school to use during PE.
  • Launched the Museo Art Program in every classroom, giving our students professional instruction in the varied principles of art and design.
  • Provided over $4,000 in funding to bring exciting, hands-on science to each classroom via Science to Go.

Community Building

  • Multicultural Night: an annual celebration of the diversity found at Discovery Elementary, with a parade of nations, demonstrations, performances, and even foods shared from a variety of cultures.
  • Spooky Spaghetti: our first-ever Spooky Spaghetti was a success with more than 800 people attending wearing costumes, dancing, playing games, and enjoying a yummy pasta dinner!
  • Back to School Social: everyone enjoyed great weather, snacks, treats and an opportunity to welcome the playground back to Discovery!
  • Family Movie Night: our FREE family movie night brought together kids and kids-at-heart for a fun movie with snacks and laughter.
  • Black Lives Matter: Our support is behind Black Lives Matter, both with our Black students, and our community at large. One of our first steps of support will be donating $500 worth of books written by Black authors to our Discovery library.

Fun (and Learning!) at School

  • Eager Reader: over 550 students participated in Eager Reader, reading 593,395 minutes and earning fun prizes and awarding 1,483 books along the way!
  • Spirit Week: Spirit Week gave our students the opportunity to show off what makes them unique, from wearing pajamas to rocking their favorite Discovery Spirit wear.
  • Spelling Bee: despite Mother Nature’s best efforts (so much snow!), the Spelling Bee showcased how hard the students of Discovery worked to show off their skills.
  • Reflections: the annual Reflections art contest got our students to connect with their inner artist and share their creativity.
  • Over 40 pizzas were purchased in support of Literacy Night, an outstanding event that encouraged our love for learning.

Celebrating Our Teachers and Staff

  • Staff Appreciation Week was still able to happen remotely, with over 150 students submitting an image for our appreciation video. And even though the week has passed, all teachers and staff are receiving a lovely bouquet of flowers this week!
  • Holiday Cookies at Lunch was once again much-loved by the staff, as they enjoyed a variety of tasty treats.
  • A banner has been hung at the school to remind our teachers and staff just how much we appreciate them. They’ll be able to see it this week with the hand-off of materials.

We know next year will look different, but we remain dedicated to the mission of supporting Discovery and our students. Donations like yours now and in the future will help ensure we can keep programs and support like this going.

BIG THANK YOU goes out to our 100's of volunteers through the year. You move mountains and we are grateful for your dedication to Discovery.
