With construction issues behind us and more opportunities ahead next school year, there are many ways that you can get involved at Discovery. Please consider volunteering to lead one of the PTSA programs below during the 2019-2020 school year:

Scholastic Book Fair - Pooja S., seeks co-chair


Bus Greeter Chair - open

Timeframe: September, first 2 weeks of school
Time Commitment: 30 minutes before and after school

Greeters will meet the kids as they exit the bus, help them learn their bus numbers and direct them to their classrooms. They also meet them after school and assist them to get the correct bus. Chair will be responsible to secure volunteers and assign them a schedule to assist in this event.

Lunch Helper Chair - open

Timeframe: September, first 2 weeks of school
Time Commitment: 3 hours

Assisting the younger children in the lunchroom each day with their student numbers and getting their lunches. Also help opening their pudding cup or juice box. Chair will be responsible to secure volunteers and assign them a schedule in lunch room for first two weeks of school.

Popcorn Friday Chair - open

Timeframe: October-June, once a month
Time Commitment: 1st Friday of every month, <1 hour/month

The first Friday of every month volunteers pop popcorn for our students at Discovery. The chair is responsible to coordinate with volunteers in making and distributing popcorn bags in to classrooms or give it out during recess according to the construction schedule at school this year. They are also responsible for ordering the popcorn supplies, ensuring the cleanliness and operation of the popcorn machine, and securing volunteers each month.

Multi-Cultural Night Chair - open

Timeframe: October/November
Time Commitment: 12-14 hours

Multicultural night celebrates our wonderful multicultural school community by coming together to explore facts of countries around the world, taste international food and enjoy performances from across the globe. The chair, with a committee, will be responsible for promoting and organizing the event, as well as supporting the families sharing their culture and securing volunteers to assist this event.

Stem Fair - Prajakta G., seeks co-chair


Hearing & Vision Testing Chair - open

Timeframe: October/November
Time Commitment: 10 hours

Once a year, Discovery tests all students for both hearing and vision. The chair will act as liaison to school nurse, secure and schedule volunteers, and train them for morning and afternoon shifts. This is a one day event, with some pre-planning involved.

Staff Appreciation Chair - open

Timeframe: April/May
Time Commitment: 6-8 hours

PTSA recognizes the teachers and staff with special activities and treats towards end of the year. The chair co-ordinates with volunteers and organizes activities through the staff appreciation week like door decorations for each class, staff luncheon, treat cart, and coffee cart.


Art Show Chair - open

Timeframe: April/May
Time Commitment: 12-15 hours

Coordinate with art docents to have specific art project posted outside the classroom and ensure all 5th grade classrooms have submitted an art auction piece. Send flyers home, promote event through normal PTSA channels. Get volunteers to help with setting up food and beverages.
