Pick your topic based on your interests in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math. Your display can be a science experiment, a robotic demonstration, an informational board, or a digital presentation on a laptop. Remember to take pictures to document your discoveries!

Below are a few ideas for STEM FAIR projects based on 3 different DOMAINS:
Discover, Design, or Demonstrate.

Discover Domain: Ask and Answer
This type of project has students using the scientific method to conduct an experiment.

We have human-made batteries in just about everything we use, but I have heard that regular pieces of fruit can work like batteries. Which fruits can produce the most electric current?

We know organic food is free from pesticides and other chemicals, but can people taste the difference between organic and non-organic foods?

HOW DOES THE "DISCOVER" PROCESS WORK?
  1. Ask a question
  2. Research the topic
  3. Make a hypothesis
  4. Test with an experiment
  5. Record the data
  6. Form a conclusion
 EXAMPLE:

Design Domain: Build and Solve
This type of project has students using the design process in order to create their own solution.

I know that rubber bands can store energy, and they don't need to use electricity. How can I design a toy car to move the farthest using just one rubber band to power it?

I'm always dropping and breaking things! If I make a container smaller than a basketball that can hold an egg, what is the best design to have it survive a long fall?

Recycling is important! Aluminum cans are great for recycling, but they take up so much space. Can I design a better way to smash a can down flat?

HOW DOES THE "DESIGN" PROCESS WORK?

  1. Identify the problem
  2. Research the topic
  3. Specify the requirements
  4. Brainstorm solutions
  5. Design a prototype
  6. Iterate through testing and developing
  7. Analyze results

EXAMPLES:

Demonstrate Domain: Create and Show

This type of project allows students to show off something amazing they have created using STEM principles.

My friends are always throwing things like paper and bottles in the trash when they could be recycled. I programmed a game using Scratch where they have to catch recyclables in a bin, and now it's easy to remember what to do!

When I was cutting shapes from paper, I kept leaving little scraps of red paper on the floor. I programmed an Ozobot to check all across the floor and play a sound if it found red paper.

HOW DOES THE "DEMONSTRATE" PROCESS WORK?

  1. State the purpose of the project
  2. Research the chosen tool
  3. Create a plan or choose a plan to follow
  4. Document the creation process. Take pictures/video throughout the process.
  5. Display a finished project (or a work that is still in progress)
