The positions will be voted on at the May 22, 2012 PTSA General meeting, 7 pm at the school library.

Discovery PTSA sponsored Toiletries Drive for Tiger Mountain High School: May 2012

For those who do not know, Tiger Mountain Community High School is Issaquah School District's only alternative high school. We maintain an average of 80 students in our various programs which include regular education, special education, and I.S.E.P. Tiger Mountain does not have a PTSA to help support their school.
Many of the students at Tiger Mountain students come from families with desperate financial issues and needs. Many of the students go hungry over the weekend while not at school where they receive a free lunch. Each month a different PTSA in the Issaquah school district has been sponsoring a food drive so these kids can have lunch on Fridays (only a ½ day so there is no official lunch that day) and some food to take home with them over the weekends. May is our month to show these kids we care! Thanks to many of the other PTSA’s, Tiger Mountain has enough food at the moment however that is not all that these children need. They are asking that this month instead of food, toiletries be collected. We will be collecting the following products at our Taste of Discovery and at the Art Show!
Please send in: Soap, Shampoo, Conditioner, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

SUPPORT THE BOND!!

Hello Discovery Families,
As many of you are aware there is a bond for the Issaquah school district on the April 16th election. Your Discovery PTSA voted to support the passage of this bond at our Jan. meeting. Now we need your help in getting our message out to the rest of the community.
Next Monday, April 2nd is the first of two "Honk and Waves" to support the bond. Join our staff, lead by second grade teacher, Kim Hand as they show the community Discovery PTSA's support of the bond. The group will meet at the entrance to Discovery at 8am and walk up to the entrance of Pine Lake Park. They will be there until 8:30 am. All are welcome to come and join in the fun, including your kids!!
Don't worrry if you can't make it on April 2nd. There will be another chance to get out and show your support. Our second honk and wave will be April 16.

Talent Show Auditions!

Can you tell jokes? Sing? Dance? Play the piano, guitar, banjo or any other instrument? Jump rope? Walk on your hands? Or any other skill that you can show off to your school mates? Well then, the talent show is for you! Don't forget to sign up here on the website, name your act, practice, and be at the school to audition this Wednesday, March 14th, from 6-8pm. The line gets long so be ready and get there on time!

1st ever LEAP YEAR DANCE!

Come one, come all to the 1st ever Discovery Elementary Leap Year Dance! Register online, click on Leap Year Dance in the left column. Just come with your friends, in casual attire to dance to some great music, learn some new dances, enjoy some refreshments and celebrate Leap Year! Be sure to register as we need to know a parents name of who is at the dance and in charge of each student and know how many students to expect. Thanks!

Yo Plateau night this Friday!

The first Friday of every month is Yo Plateau night for Discovery Elementary! Go have a little yogurt, enjoy the fire and some games and Discovery Elementary will get 20% of the proceeds. Don't forget to mention Discovery Elementary when ordering. See you there this Friday Feb. 3rd!

Spelling Bee Rescheduled for Wed. Feb. 1st, 5:30 to 8:30 pm

The Spelling Bee has been rescheduled for Wed. Feb. 1st. Everyone is welcome to come out and cheer on the 10 grade level finalists in this exciting competition!
Kindergarten: 5:30 to 6 pm
1st grade: 6 to 6:30 pm
2nd grade: 6:30 to 7 pm
3rd grade: 7 to 7:30 pm
4th grade: 7:30 to 8 pm
5th grade: 8 to 8:30 pm

Spelling Bee cancelled for Jan. 18th

Due to the impending snow and school cancellation, the Spelling Bee will be postponed. We will work on getting it rescheduled once school is back in session.

Eager Reader

We had a wonderful turnout for tallying Tuesday and just enough to pass out books at all 3 lunches today. 3 cheers for our wonderful volunteers for helping this be such a successful program! The kids loved it and we could not do it without our volunteers.

Spelling Bee

2nd Annual Discovery Elementary Spelling Bee

Calling all kids who love to spell and like a challenge! The second annual Spelling Bee will be on Jan. 18th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm in the MPR. Preliminary rounds will be Jan. 5th and Jan. 6th from 8:30 to 9 am in the MPR before school. Registration is now open just click on Spelling Bee, sign in and follow the pages. Don't forget to click the box for your child to participate and click on next or done at the bottom of each page. Word lists will be posted soon. Don't forget we also need volunteers to help with the event!

Preliminary rounds will consist of 20 words from the list and 5 challenge words. Spelling Bee will consist of words from the lists but may also contain additional words if needed. There will be 10 finalists chosen from the preliminary round per grade level.

Jan. 18th schedule is as followed:
5:30-6 pm: Kindergarten round (please arrive 5:15 for K and 5:30 for 1st)
6- 6:30 pm: 1st grade round (2nd graders arrives 6pm)
6:30-7 pm: 2nd grade round (3rd graders arrive 6:30)
7-7:30pm: 3rd grade round (4th graders arrives 7pm)
7:30-8 pm: 4th grade round (5th graders arrive 7:30)
8-8:30 pm: 5th grade round

Reflections

REFLECTIONS - We need judges!

The Reflections art is hanging on the wall just outside the Discovery Elementary Office!

This art needs some judging . . . and YOU are qualified to do it!

Please stop by the office and pick up a form for Reflections judging. These are located in the office on the wall with all of the document holders. Also, please ask for some comment cards to fill out along with the judging form. They have them behind the secretaries desk.

The last day to submit your judging sheets will be on THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10.

Emergency Kits

Many families have not sent in their child's emergency kit yet. Each family is responsible for sending in their own child’s emergency kit for their classroom. Please provide food for approximately 72 hours. The non perishable food should not expire (or rot) before the end of the school year. It must fit in a gallon freezer bag. ABSOLUETLY NO NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS!! Examples of this could be dry cereal, energy bars, beef jerky, hard candy etc. Other comfort and emergency items may be included as long as it fits in the gallon freezer bag. Other items may include: note / picture from parents, glow stick, emergency blanket, etc. Emergency kits not used during the school year will be returned home at the end of the year. PTSA will still be providing bottle water for each classroom. PTSA will also be providing food and water for the gym, library, music room, and resource rooms in case your child is in one of those rooms during a lock down or emergency.
Please use a gallon freezer bag, and don’t forget to label the bag with your child’s name, grade, and teacher!!!
This is very important! Send in the emergency kits to your child's classroom today! Thanks!

All in for Kids Annual Fund Campaign
You’ve probably heard that the Calling for Kids Campaign is now the All in for Kids Annual Fund Campaign. Why the name change? To emphasize the need for everyone—parents, grandparents, friends, community and business members—to get involved and to encourage families to donate prior to our calling nights (November 16, 17 & 19). All in for Kids campaign flyers are available in your school office and online at www.isfdn.org.

You can make a donation early, by November 4, and not get a call by going to isfdn.org and making a contribution today.

Don't forget to sign up for the Walk A Thon which will be held on Friday, October 7! Your child has to be signed up on this website to participate, go to the left side of this home page and click on Walk A Thon/BBQ. One parent for each child needs to be on the Discovery School grounds when the Walk A Thon is taking place. You will also be able to sign up to volunteer, order meals and make a donation to Discovery PTSA to further our programs for all the students this year. Do it today! THANK YOU!
